Montville Dive Medicals

We provide Dive Medicals in Montville, Maleny, all of the Hinterland and regional areas of the Sunshine Coast, as well as the metro area on the coastal fringe.  Obtaining a dive medical is essential for all people wanting to take part in either commercial or recreational diving.  Scuba diving is an exhilarating, yet demanding and strenuous activity.  When performed correctly, applying the right procedures, it is usually very safe.  If, however, the diver has a pre-existing medical condition it can be dangerous, even fatal.  Whilst diving underwater, any medical conditions or disorders can cause a diver to experience:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Decompression sickness
  • Reduced mobility
  • Disorientation
  • Impaired judgment

Diving can be very strenuous under certain conditions. A participant’s heart, lungs and circulation need to be in great health. As a safety precaution, every diver in Queensland are legally required to pass a Diving Medical Examination obtained within accordance of Australian Standards AS 4005.1 and guidelines set by SPUMS – The South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society

Dive Medical Examination

At Montville Health Centre, we perform two kinds of Diving Medical Examinations – Commercial and Recreational. Each will take approximately 45 minutes. The medical consists of:

  • Height/Weight Measurements
  • Urine test
  • Blood pressure test
  • Lung function test
  • Hearing/eyesight tests

We conduct Dive medical examinations in Montville, Maleny, all of the Hinterland and regional areas of the Sunshine Coast, as well as the metro area on the coastal fringe.  A medical questionnaire will need to be completed. The purpose of this medical questionnaire is to find out if you need to be examined by your doctor before participating in entry-level recreational diving certificate training. A positive response to a question does not necessarily disqualify you from diving. A positive response may simply mean that there is a pre-existing condition that might affect your safety whilst diving, so you must seek the advice of a medical practitioner, preferably one with experience in dive medicine, prior to participating in any dive activities.  It may also be necessary to get a compulsory X-ray, this will incur an additional cost.

Conducting Dive Medicals

Not all General Practitioners can perform a Dive Medical Examination, they can only be conducted by a Doctor who has completed specialised training to medically examine occupational, commercial and recreational divers.  Dr Peter Herbert has decades of experience, with various degrees and post-graduate medical qualifications, including:

  • Dive Medicals
  • Aviation Medicine
  • Obstetrics
  • Gynaecology
  • Occupational/environmental medicine
  • Travel/tropical medicine

Commercial Diving

Commercial diving occurs when underwater work is undertaken for reward or profit. This immediately deems the diving subject to the regulations of occupational health and safety legislation.  Commercial diving could be viewed as any of the following:

  • Diving at work
  • Construction diving
  • Civil diving
  • Professional diving
  • Industrial diving
  • Oilfield diving
  • Salvage diving
  • Police diving
  • Military Diving

Under Australian diving legislation and AS/NZS 2299.1:2007, occupational divers must be trained in accordance with the provisions of the Standard and need to obtain an ADAS certificate, other occupational diver training, or qualifications issued by the relevant regulatory authority.  If you are just beginning as an entry-level scuba diver, or a Commercial diver requiring an AS/NZS 2299 Diving Medical Examination, Montville Health Centre in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland can provide for your needs.
